there’s been two deaths in friends’ families this week. one was a father, who died at 55, his sons were on a roadtrip and out of mobile reception, they found out two days later. the funeral is today. the other was a cousin, only 26, who died in a freak accident in Laos. there is a lot of grief. and sublimating grief into making tea, or waiting, or walks at nighttime. we respond to the grief of others in an intensely practical way, in shifts of calling times, a calling tree, like we used to do when netball games were cancelled on a rainy saturday, and we delegate the same series of thoughts this way and that, swapping funeral times, or adjectives, awful, or unfair, or horrible. grieving sounds like regina spector and windy days, and waiting for phones to ring.
